In order to better respond to the multiple challenges
faced by returning inmates and their families, it is necessary
to
reconsider the way programs have operated in the past—in
relative isolation from each other. Once we begin to focus
on better ways of working, we see the need to redesign program
elements, work collaboratively with different service providers,
and integrate concepts to improve access into our systems
of
care. Strategies may include:
- Initiating leadership partnerships to create models
that improve access to care for individuals during incarceration
and upon their return home.
- Implementing a hotline for
current and former inmates to discuss HIV, other infectious
disease, substance abuse, and
mental health issues, as well as to assist with referral
for educational, medical, legal, and housing needs.
- Instituting “mentorship” programs
that are volunteer-based and tap into various communities
(e.g., ex-inmates
and the recovering community) that play a vital part in
linking inmates to service agencies and helping them reintegrate
into the community.
