Despite
years of program interventions, policy changes, and significant
allocations of resources, the gap between infant mortality
rates for white and African American births, as well as white
and Native American births, is not improving. The Michigan
infant mortality rate continues to be greater than the national
rate. In response, the Department of Community Health is offering
an opportunity for all interested parties to hear compelling
data, to share success stories of local projects, and to discuss
strategies for a new agenda to resolve these disparities.
As directed
by the Michigan State legislature, participants in this summit
will analyze the data on infant mortality, discuss local and
national practices that have proven to be effective, advise
the department on prioritizing its efforts to make them more
effective, and report the summit findings to the state legislature
by March 1, 2002.
