What do we mean by "Systems Integration" and how does it increase access to services for individuals who have infectious disease and substance abuse issues?

The concept of "systems integration" can be difficult to both understand and operationalize. One of the long-term goals of Cross-Training is to foster enduring partnerships among public and private service systems for responding to the challenging prevention, treatment, and care needs of those at risk and those affected by infectious disease and substance abuse. When services are accessible, a critical mass of people affected by these widespread problems can be reached and served. When services are comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible, they can dramatically improve clients' lives.

Many of these people are dealing with complex, co-occurring conditions, and it is difficult for one service center to adequately meet all of their needs. Thus, by:

1. Cross-Training infectious disease and substance abuse service system staff,
2. sharing information about the resources that are available in the community, and
3. integrating available services,

staff and programs are better equipped to respond to the complex needs of individuals.
