Public
Input Under the New Freedom Initiative
In carrying
out President Bush's Executive
Order 13217, under the New
Freedom Initiative, Public
Input is requested on barriers in federal law, policy,
and programs that limit the ability of people of any age with
a disability to live more independently in the community,
engage in public employment, and participate in community
life.
National
Listening Session
There
will be a National Listening Session on September 5, 2001,
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.
The Listening
Session will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International
Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC.
Consumers,
family members, advocacy organizations, providers, relevant
State and federal representatives, and others are invited
to provide a three-minute testimony to federal officials.
If
you would like to request a time slot to provide a three-minute
testimony during the listening session, you will need to register
by August 22. The registration form contains a place to
indicate your request for testimony. While time slots will
be allocated primarily on a first come basis, we will work
to include representatives from a range of stakeholder groups.
Because
of the limited time available and the number of individuals
we anticipate will be interested in attending the listening
session, it is possible that there will not be enough time
for everyone requesting time to speak. By the end of August,
you will be notified if you were allocated time to speak.
At that time, you will receive information about the process
for providing testimony and the approximate time you are scheduled
to speak.
To assure
that everyone has an opportunity to provide comments, we encourage
you to also submit written comments by the August 27, 2001
deadline, in accordance to the requirements outlined in
the July 25, Federal Register notice.
Registrations
can be made on-line, by fax
or mail, or by calling Martrell Kelly at (202) 828-5100.
This event
will be videotaped and photographed for future dissemination.
Should you have any concerns about your possible appearance
on these conference videotapes or in these photographs, please
contact Martrell Kelly at (202) 828-5100.
There
are limited funds available to help consumers with travel
expenses. To request funds, please contact Jennifer McIntosh
at (202) 828-5100 by Thursday, August 16.
